Advanced Training for Hearst Tower Officers (Image)

Advanced Training

Over the course of recent Saturdays, 22 security officers assigned to a large commercial real estate account in Manhattan attended the New York State Enhanced 40-hour Security Officer Training Program. The in-depth curriculum (developed by the New York State Office of Homeland Security) provides a much greater level of knowledge than the average NYS security officer training. After completion, the participants are known as Security Specialists.

The course included modules on Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD), Terrorism Indicators & Trends, Vulnerability & Risk Assessments, CPR/AED/First Aid and FEMA incident management modules.

A security responder and shift supervisor observed a vehicle approach a nearby power substation via closed-circuit television. Two subjects exited the vehicle, removed part of the fence, and drove onto the property. The supervisor notified local police and the client contact.

The suspects crashed their vehicle a short distance away while attempting to flee from the police and were apprehended. They were in the process of stealing an expensive 300-pound piece of specialized equipment.

An assistant security director devised a creative way to give back to the local community.  He obtained fingerprinting kits free of charge from various laboratories and manufacturers. He then worked with mall management to publicize availability of the kits and coordinate distribution during various mall events.

He also set up a Toys for Tots collection center, after obtaining mall management approval, to draw attention to the security office, and distributed the fingerprinting kits to individuals dropping off toys.
